Market structure: CHoCH and BOS
A way of reading trend from the sequence of highs and lows, and of naming the moment that sequence changes.

Trend as a sequence
Strip away indicators and a trend is a pattern in the extremes. An uptrend is higher highs and higher lows. A downtrend is lower highs and lower lows. Anything else is a range.
The usefulness of this framing is that it gives you a specific price at which you are wrong: the last significant low in an uptrend. Not a feeling — a level.
BOS — break of structure
A break of structure is the trend continuing: in an uptrend, price takes out the previous high and confirms the sequence. It says the existing direction is intact.
BOS is the unremarkable event. It is worth naming mainly so that its opposite has a name too.
CHoCH — change of character
A change of character is the first break AGAINST the sequence: in an uptrend, price takes out the last higher low. The pattern that defined the trend is broken.
This is not "the trend has reversed" — many CHoCHs are followed by the trend resuming. It is "the thing that was true is no longer true", which is a reason to reassess rather than a prediction of what comes next. The honest reading is: the level that defined the trend failed; what replaces it is unknown.
Sweeps: the trap version
Stops sit just beyond obvious highs and lows, which makes those levels attractive to trade INTO rather than through. A sweep is price pushing past a level, triggering the orders sitting there, and immediately reversing back inside.
On the chart a sweep and a genuine break look identical while they are happening. What separates them is what follows: a break holds beyond the level, a sweep does not. This is why structure calls made in real time are provisional — the same candle can be either, depending on the next few.
Timeframe decides the meaning
Structure exists on every timeframe and they routinely disagree. A CHoCH on 15 minutes inside an intact daily uptrend is noise for a swing trader and the whole picture for a scalper.
Neither is more correct. The rule is only that the timeframe you read structure on must be the timeframe you are trading — mixing them produces confident conclusions about the wrong chart.
Common questions
- Does a CHoCH mean the trend has reversed?
- No. It means the sequence that defined the trend has been broken — the level that was holding failed. Reversal is one of the possible continuations, not the announced one.
- What is the difference between BOS and CHoCH?
- BOS is a break in the direction of the trend — continuation. CHoCH is a break against it — the first sign that the pattern changed.
- How do I tell a sweep from a real break?
- Only afterwards, by whether price holds beyond the level or snaps back inside. While it is happening they look the same, which is why a structure read is always provisional.
